Be of Good Cheer
John 16:33 “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”
Background: John wrote this book to prove that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God. Chapter sixteen takes place the night before Jesus Christ’s crucifixion when He is preparing the disciples for His immediate, yet brief, departure. Verse 33 is the triumphant conclusion of this chapter as Jesus gave the disciples His farewell.
Jesus did not sugarcoat the reality that we will have tribulation. The Greek word for tribulation has the idea of stress or pressing. Each of us faces trials and struggles whether they are finances, relationships, health, or any other issue that shakes our faith and causes us stress and anxiety. Understanding this removes the false hope that perfect days are ahead. (There will be a day of rest and unending happiness but only in heaven.)
Jesus also tells us to “be of good cheer.” We are to have courage and hope, trusting Him as we face challenges. Knowing that no matter what, He is with us and will guide us through every trial if we give that burden to Him.
Jesus assures us that He has overcome the world. When He spoke these words to the disciples, He was yet to be arrested, forsaken, rejected, mocked, tortured, and crucified. But in the glory of His resurrection, He conquered death, hell, and the grave.
Once we understand this praiseworthy truth, we should refrain from living in discouragement and feeling defeated. This is the foundation for our peace in Him. This is a supernatural peace – the peace that passes all understanding (Philippians 4:7).
People can follow Jesus and still deny themselves the peace that He offers. How do we get it? When we accept Jesus’ victory spoken of in this verse and make it our own victory as His child. We trust His promise.
As you go through the day and continue through 2023, remember these words of Jesus. You have a Savior who understands your struggles and has already won the ultimate victory promising to help us overcome any tribulation we may face. Memorize this verse for March, holding fast and accepting His promise of peace.
Lord Jesus, thank you for Your words of hope and encouragement in John 16:33. Help me to take heart and be courageous, knowing that You are with me and have already overcome the world. Give me Your peace as I face whatever challenges come by way. Amen.
