Trusting God’s Path
Exodus 13:17-22 (17) And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not through the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt: (18) But God led the people about, through the way of the wilderness of the Red sea: and the children of Israel went up harnessed out of the land of Egypt. (19) And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him: for he had straitly sworn the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you; and ye shall carry up my bones away hence with you. (20) And they took their journey from Succoth, and encamped in Etham, in the edge of the wilderness. (21) And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night: (22) He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.
I don’t know what you are facing today, but my recent morning Bible reading spoke to me. Two dear friends of mine are in their first phase of chemotherapy, facing a similar trial I have walked through myself. As I studied this passage, I initially took notes to encourage them, but I realized these truths are valuable for all of us.
It is often difficult to understand or accept the path God calls us to walk, especially when we love Him and strive to live in obedience. We know trials come to everyone, but deep down, we hope for an exemption. Yet, God’s love remains steadfast, even when it doesn’t “feel” like love. That’s why He instructs us not to rely on our feelings but to trust in Him (Proverbs 3:5; Proverbs 28:26; Jeremiah 17:9). Israel was learning this same lesson as they started a long, hard journey that was God’s will for His chosen people.
Background: After a series of devastating plagues, Pharaoh finally released the Israelites from bondage. This passage marks the beginning of their journey to freedom.
God Chooses the Way (Exodus 13:17-18)
He planned the route for His people.
“Nothing takes God by surprise, for in His providence, He plans the best way for His people to take. We may not always understand or agree with His way, but it is always the right way.” – Warren Wiersbe (Psalm 23:3)

We should pray Psalm 25:4-5.
The route God chose for Israel to Mount Sinai was not the shortest or easiest. The shorter path would have led them through Egyptian military posts and Philistine territory, likely resulting in battle. God, in His wisdom, led them on a longer route to protect them.
If God leads you down an unexpected, more difficult path, don’t resist or complain – trust Him. He sees the entire journey from beginning to end and knows what is best. He is never in a hurry, but He will always lead you safely. As long as you follow Him, you remain in the place of His blessing.
Are You Armed for Battle?
When the Israelites left Egypt, they were “harnessed” or armed for battle (Exodus 13:18). They did not leave in a state of panic or disorder.
Are we spiritually armed for the battles we face each day? We must equip ourselves with:
- The Word of God (Ephesians 6:17) – Our sword for spiritual warfare.
- Faith in God’s promises (Hebrews 11:1) – Trusting Him even when we don’t see the outcome.
- Prayer (Ephesians 6:18) – Staying in constant communication with our divine Commander.
God Strengthens His People’s Faith (Exodus 13:19)
Joseph made his brothers promise that when God delivered Israel from Egypt, they would carry his remains to the Promised Land (Genesis 50:24-25; Hebrews 11:22). His coffin served as a powerful reminder to Israel that God always keeps His promises.
When you face uncertainty, remind yourself of God’s past faithfulness. Reflecting on His goodness will strengthen your faith and help you walk in obedience. Simply start by counting your many blessings as the old hymn goes.
God Goes Before His People (Exodus 13:20-22)
To guide the Israelites, God provided a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night – constant, visible reminders of His presence and direction.
We don’t have the same physical guidance today, but God still leads us through 1) the Word of God – a light for our path (Psalm 119:105) – and through 2) the Spirit of God – our Guide for all truth (John 16:12-13).
At times, we may be uncertain about God’s direction, but if we wait on Him, He will reveal His way in His perfect timing. His guidance is always available – day and night.
Whatever you are facing today, God wants to show you His love. During my most difficult days of chemotherapy and radiation, I saw His love in unexpected ways – an encouraging text, the first hummingbird of the season, a verse on social media, a timely sermon, or even wildlife sightings on our farm (God knows what brings me joy!).
God’s guidance is always perfect, even when His path seems longer or harder. Trust that He sees the full journey and is leading you safely. Stay armed with His Word, remember His faithfulness, and seek His direction daily. As you follow Him, walk in confidence, knowing He is with you every step of the way.
